Mission and vision
Reading is a basic need that provides access to another and new world. A country with reading citizens is important. You have to be able to read to follow education. The books full of information broaden the knowledge. In addition, reading is a form of relaxation in an environment that is sober and full of worries for many children. You have to develop reading skills by doing it regularly: the start starts with listening to reading aloud, then learning to read yourself and once the skill is mastered, understanding arises. A whole new world opens up when there is a range of books at the level a child can handle. However, this suggests there are of books available to train these skills. This is not the case in many places in developing countries, books are too expensive for most people to buy and there is no library to borrow books.
In short, there is no reading infrastructure and reading culture. My Book Buddy is in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which endorses the fight against poverty and quality of education as goals.
Strategy
The My Book Buddy program line starts in the first grade of primary education and provides each group with a bookcase with enough books in their own language per age and level to make a weekly choice and to take a new reading book home. The cabinets are made by the local population on the basis of a construction drawing.
A handy backpack protects the book during transport. The teachers receive training that focuses on the importance of reading for the development of the child, they are given suggestions for reading-promoting activities and for setting up a simple administrative system. The mutual exchange of results promotes school management. Participation is a key word here. On My Book Buddy Day, the weekly swap day, the My Book Buddy flag flies as the students sing the My Book Buddy song together.
Progress
The schools regularly inform our foundation about the progress. Collaboration with local partners helps to ensure that the activities are anchored in a sustainable manner. My Book Buddy is committed to involving the local population and stimulating the economy. The bookcases are manufactured locally, books and bags are purchased locally. My Book Buddy supports projects on a one-off basis, it must be clear from the start that the schools and the parents themselves take responsibility for continuity and sustainability.
The Board, employees and travel companions of My Book Buddy are committed and committed volunteers. The core values of My Book Buddy give meaning to our daily thinking and acting and are guiding: child-friendly, knowledgeable, with impact, relevant and simple.
