All of the above countries use Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA), an internationally recognized oral assessment tool for testing early reading skills, requiring approximately 15 minutes per child. It focuses on the individual child and is a one-on-one assessment.
Five basic skills are tested that are also mentioned in the MBB Guide for teachers:
Phonemic awareness: being able to see through that words consist of separate sounds.
Phonics: linking written letters to their sounds and forming spelling patterns; shapes of the sound.
Fluency: refers to the achievement of speed, accuracy and expression in reading;
Vocabulary: refers to knowing words and their meaning.
